The Northern District of California U.S. Probation Office seeks to serve the U.S. Court System and improve public safety by investigating and supervising individuals convicted of federal crimes, enforcing sentences, and providing correctional treatment to persons under supervision. The Office is now seeking qualified new U.S. Probation Officers or U.S. Probation Officer transfers. Selected candidates may be placed at Classification Level (CL) 25, 27, or 28 depending on qualifications and experience, with promotion potential to CL-27 or CL-28. More than one position may be filled from this vacancy announcement. Office Structure and Responsibilities The Probation Discipline is bifurcated into Presentence Investigation (PSI) and Post-Conviction Supervision. PSI Officers conduct investigations and prepare reports on convicted individuals' ability to pay fines, restitution, and other costs; apply sentencing guidelines; determine recommendations; and testify in court. Supervision Officers develop supervision plans, maintain case records, and ensure adherence to court-imposed conditions, coordinating with treatment facilities, counselors, shelters, and employers. They assess risk and needs using evidence-based practices, monitor compliance, investigate violations, and report to the court. All officers perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications All candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution demonstrating the capacity to understand and apply legal and human relations skills. For CL-25: One year of specialized experience or completion of a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (e.g., GPA of 2.90 or higher, upper third of class, or 3.5+ in major), or completion of one year of graduate study. For CL-27: Two years of specialized experience or a master’s degree/Juris Doctor in a related field. For CL-28: Two years of specialized experience required. Additional Requirements Applicants must be physically capable, with good vision and hearing. Age restrictions apply for first-time law enforcement officers under retirement provisions. Specialized experience includes work in probation, pretrial services, corrections, investigations, or related fields. The duties involve moderate to arduous physical activity and managing potentially dangerous individuals.
