CNN is seeking a seasoned and versatile editor to help drive and execute coverage from our powerful Justice reporting team for all platforms. We are looking for a journalist with a fast metabolism, expertise about federal law enforcement and courts, and a competitive drive. The ideal candidate will be a big thinker and skilled wordsmith with a track record of sharply framing and elevating text stories. This person must excel not only at covering breaking news on tight deadlines but also at guiding original reporting and shaping ambitious enterprise pieces. We expect this editor to help reporters land high-impact reporting with precision, context and nuance, and to write with clarity and authority. This person also will be expected to use video, images and graphics to tell stories in dynamic formats that engage audiences across CNN’s platforms. Responsibilities include managing all aspects of the editorial work of the Justice team, directing reporting, vetting source-based information, editing drafts of stories for publication, envisioning and assigning reporting targets and stories, working with reporters and producers to ensure reporting is fair and complete, managing breaking news with excellent judgment, editing distinctive stories with sharp framing and authoritative prose, pivoting quickly between assignments, coordinating with colleagues across the news organization, serving as a subject-matter expert, managing other journalists and ensuring their training and development, and budget responsibility and oversight. Qualifications include 10 or more years of editorial and digital news environment experience, 2-3+ years of management experience, a college degree or equivalent industry experience, exceptional editorial acumen, strong writing, editing and storytelling skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced news environment 24/7.
