At Houston Methodist, the Inpatient Coder is responsible for accurately assigning diagnostic and procedure codes to inpatient encounters based on documentation within the electronic medical record, ensuring compliance with established rules and regulatory guidelines. People Essential Functions Interact and communicate effectively with the coding team and stakeholders. Participate in coding meetings, provide feedback, assist others, and share knowledge. Service Essential Functions Respond promptly to coding requests and review accounts for accuracy. Initiate queries with physicians for diagnoses or procedures as needed. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Maintain high coding quality standards, ensuring accuracy with ICD-10-CM/PCS codes. Review and correct discharge data, and accurately enter physician information. Review documentation, abstract data, and utilize tools for accuracy. Adhere to AHIMA ethical coding standards and official guidelines. Finance Essential Functions Code and abstract efficiently while maintaining accuracy. Support organizational goals for Accounts Receivable. Process work items timely within departmental standards. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Evaluate and improve personal performance. Contribute ideas for improving coding quality and processes. Minimum Qualifications Associate's degree or higher in a CAHIIM-accredited program, or equivalent experience. One year of relevant inpatient coding experience or completion of the Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice or Transition Program. Required certifications: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or CCA from AHIMA. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficiency in coding systems, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. Effective communication skills and knowledge of electronic medical records and coding software. Ability to work effectively with various stakeholders and in common office software. Additional Requirements Professional attire: Business professional. On-call: No, unless during emergencies. Travel: May require travel within and outside the Houston area.
